    Japanese golfers filled four of the first six placings in the Singapore Open which finished yesterday (Monday). It was won by the Japanese World Cup star, Takaaki Kono, with a nine-under-par total of 279.

    He won by four strokes from fellow-countryman Takashi Murakami. Both shot 68 for the final round.

    Ireneo Legaspi of the Philippines came third on 285 and sharing fourth place on 287 were Australia's Graham Marsh and the Japanese duo, Masahi Czaki and Shigeru Uchida.

    Ozaki, a former baseball star, led the field into the final round, but crashed with 77. Murakami went into the final round five strokes from the leader, but picked up four strokes to put him in second place.

    Kono took over the lead after the second hole and played almost faultless golf to capture the S$10,000 (GBP1450) first prize.

    His next aim is to retain the Malaysian title, the third leg of the 1972 Asian circuit which begins on Thursday.
