  • Description

Carrying the United States and Republic of Ireland flags, some 150 Roman Catholic Irish-American demonstrated outside the United Nations building yesterday (Friday) protesting against British rule in Northern Ireland.

In spite the carrying placards with violently anti-British sentiments -- such as "The Black and Tan Terror Continues" and "Ireland - 800 Years of Tyranny and Oppression" -- the demonstrators were peaceful and followed police orders to remain in the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across the street from the UN headquarters.

The march was sponsored by the Irish Northern Aid Committee, whose Chairman Michael Flannery said that there would be no peace in the Northern Counties until they were joined with the Southern Counties -- the Republic of Ireland. He also said that his supporters were demanding that the United Nations or some other country should come to the aid of Northern Ireland in its battle for Independence from Britain.
