Background: Representatives of Arab World Red Crescent Associations are meeting in Amman, Jordan, to learn more about the role of the Red Cross in peace time.

The International Committee of the Red Cross was formed a century ago to adopt international conventions on the treatment of wounded and prisoners of war. Red Cross and Red Crescent Associations are joined in an International Union which arranged the training session.

One of the problems the Union must face is now to strengthen international humanitarian law now the distinction between soldier and civilian has become blurred in guerrilla and terrorists warfare.

Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, North and South Yemen, Sudan and Syria have delegates at the session which will last for three weeks until July 20.

Mr Yusef Kiyamoush, the Union's North African and Mediterranean representative and Dr Ahmed Abu Kurah, the Jordan Red Crescent Association's chief director made the opening speeches.

Dr. Munzir Anabtawi, Study sessions Director in Jordan's Ministry of Health, University of Jordan professors and foreign experts will take part in the discussions.

It is only the second Arab World training session. The first was in Benzert, Tunisia last year.
