Background: Strong overnight winds and scattered showers thinned New York's seven day old smog blanket early on Friday (July 31), but the air pollution alert continued.
The cleaning effect of the winds was helped by many New Yorkers who cut down on motor car use in a bid to ease the air crisis which has been ??? Eastern cities for a week.
Newark, New Jersey and the Capital, Washington, have also suffered the effects of the acrid, smoke-filled air.
In New York, the Health Department urged that the elderly and people with chronic heart and respiratory diseases, should remain indoors and refrain from strenuous activities.
It was emphasised that despite the sings of the smog clearing the emergency was not yet over.
During the past seven days the smog, apart from presenting its own stifling hazard, has had many serious side-effects. Electrical power was at a premium as New York's main supply almost ground to a halt when overloading, caused by excessive demands on air-conditioning plants and unexpected day-time use of lighting, drained resources.
Con Edison, with two of its main generators out of action continues to purchase electricity from other companies to boost output.
Meanwhile, the smog-bound populace wait for the promised cool air stream from Canada which will lower the temperature and, hopefully blow away the remaining bad air.
