    In an historic ceremony at the Egmont Palace in Brussels on Saturday(22 Jan) Britain, Eire, Denmark, and Norway signed the Treaty of Accession which will take them into the European Economic Community as new members.

    The ceremony was delayed for nearly an hour after a young women had thrown ink over the British Prime Minister, Mr Edward Heath, as he arrived to take his place with other leaders. Mr Heath eventually returned to sign the treaty for Britain. Eire was represented by Prime Minister Jack Lynch, and Denmark and Norway by their Prime Ministers....Mr Krag and Mr Brattell.

    SYNOPSIS: AT THE PALACE ENTRANCE, HOWEVER, A YOUNG WOMAN THREW INK OVER BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER MR HEATH, AND WAS HUSTLED AWAY BY POLICE. THE CEREMONY WAS DELAYED FOR NEARLY AN HOUR WHILE THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER WASHED THE INK FROM HIS FACE AND CHANGED HIS SUIT. THE OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EEC MEMBER-COUNTRIES WERE APPLAUDED AS THEY ARRIVED IN PROCESSION.

    PRIME MINISTER EDWARD HEATH SIGNED THE TREATY OF ACCESSION FOR BRITAIN. WITH HIM WAS SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME, FOREIGN SECRETARY, AND COMMON MARKET NEGOTIATOR, MR GEOFFREY RIPPON.

    THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC, MR JACK LYNCH WAS ALSO APPLAUDED BY THE DELEGATES AS HE SIGNED THE TREATY.

    DENMARK WAS REPRESENTED Y ITS PREMIER, MR KRAG, WHO ADDED HIS SIGNATURE TO THE DOCUMENT WHICH WILL LEAD THE WAY TO THE CREATION OF A VAST NEW TEN-NATION ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL COMMUNITY.

    THE LAST OF THE NEW SIGNATURES TO BE ENTERED ON THE DOCUMENTS WAS THAT OF NORWAY'S PRIME MINISTER MR BRATTELI. THE CEREMONY CLIMAXED 16 MONTHS' INTENSE BARGAINING BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL SIX AN THE FOUR CANDIDATE COUNTER ES.
