Background: Athletics...and sprinters from the United States filled the first three places in the Ferdo Skok 100 metres memorial race in Celje, Yugoslavia on Thursday (20 July).

SYNOPSIS: The meeting attracted competitors from twelve countries, many came from a meeting two days earlier in Belgrade.

The final of the women's 100 metres hurdles, after the three qualifying heats...And in the final group was the Chinese hurdler Pai ??? -- one of a Cienhua of Chinese competing in international events for the first time. But the first place in the short sprint hurdle wont to the Bulgarian, Lidjia Guseva...though Pai Cienhua picked up the second place spot.

The men's long jump...competing here, Arnie Robinson, from the United States, the reigning Olympic champion. He won the event easily, his best jump of seven metres 93 centimetres almost a full half metre ahead of the West German Hans-Jurgen burger, jumping here, whose best jump was seven metres 50 centimetres.

The men's 100 metres final and the race for the Ferdo Skok memorial trophy. Two days earlier, in Belgrade, sprinters from the United States filled the first three places in the 100 metres event there. This time the same three again dominated the field...Stove Williams again came in first, in a time of 10.28 seconds, but second and third places were reversed, this time Charles Wells coming home ahead of Steve Riddick.

And is was two Americans who dominated the pole vault. Robert Pollard, jumping here, finished second to the United States indoor champion Larry Jessy, who took the event with a vault of five metres 30 centimetres.
