Background: Talks started towards an important trade deal between Peking and Tokyo this week. Yesterday (Friday, August 17), the five-member ???ation from The People's Republic of China started week-long ??? week Japanese officials in Tokyo.

??? principal topic is expected to be the granting of preferential treatment for each country's exports, and agreement could include tariff cuts.

Japanese officials are hopeful that a pact could be initialled by the end of the coming week. The current negotiations come almost a year after the two countries established diplomatic relations following decades of mistrust and hostility. Trade between them is already booming, but is mainly conducted on a private basis.
