    Taiwan's fourth international seaport has opened in commemoration of the 90th birthday of he nation's late President, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek.

    SYNOPSIS: The newly-built harbour at Taichung has shore facilities, cargo-handling equipment and navigational installations up to international standards. The port is one of ten major development projects in the country, and also includes the latest in meteorological, pilotage and quarantine facilities. The first stage, which is already in use, cost more than 100 million U.S. dollars, and is to be followed dollars, and is to be followed by a secondary stage costing about another 150 million dollars.

    It was built in three years form a deserted sea-beach, using some 2,000 retired armed forces personnel to build more than a hundred water-tight concrete chambers to form the piers and breakwater -- in only three months. During this initial stage, the harbour will be capable of handling nearly three million tons (more than three million tonnes) of freight annually. An opening message from President Yen Chia-kan has been laid in marble at he harbourside.
