SYNOPSIS: President Etienne Eyadema has decided to let the Togolese people decide whether he should continue as Togolese head of state following widespread protests over his announcement on the 23rd September that he might resign in favour of civil power. The popular demonstration in Lome the capital and elsewhere mounted steadily in the 48 hours after his radio announcement, in which he said. "The army sincerely believes that its mission is accomplished, and feels it no longer has any reason to lead the country." The protests reached their height when a popular demonstration of more than 30,000 people marched to the Togolese army headquarters, official residence of President Eyadema.

The demonstration seems to have modified the President's decision. He is now reported to have told a meeting of the Togolese People's Union that the army remained committed to its aim of retiring from political life when it felt its mission was complete. But the spontaneous reaction of many people in the country had shown that the army's task was not yet fulfilled and that it should be continued. President Eyadema, here addressing the crowds who flocked to the official residence, came to power after an army-backed coup in 1967.

His decision that he would accept the wishes of the people has been interpreted in Lome as meaning he would run as a candidate in the forthcoming elections. But he has turned down a suggestion that he should run as sole candidate.
