Background: Soccer...and champions West Germany are still in the hunt for the 1978 World Cup, but they were taken to the brink of a shock exit in a goalless draw on Saturday (10 June) with Tunisia, the surprise team of the competition. The West German manager Helmut Schoen looked more worried than usual as his team, which had slammed six goals past Mexico earlier in the week, struggled to hold a team rated no-hope outsiders when the final tournament began.

SYNOPSIS: West Germany playing left to right in the white shirts had the first chance with a corner. The Tunisian defence cleared the ball but it rolled to Bonhof whose shot was saved. Little was seen of the West German attack in the first half. However, Aggrebi for Tunisia had the best shot of the match which goalkeeper Maier just stopped.

Minutes later Aggrebi again found space but he clipped his shot from a wide angle away from the goal.

In the second half Germany came back into the game with a series of attacks. On this occasion a long range shot from Bonhof was pulled down by the Tunisian goalkeeper Nyali. Moments later a similar move produced another save to a Bonhof shot.

The underrated Tunisian team were equal to everything to Germans could manage and a shot from Dieter Muller could only find the side-netting.

Perhaps the closest the Germans came to scoring was in the last few minutes. A chip through into the Tunisian penalty area and Dieter Muller had the ball snatched from his feel by goalkeeper Nyali.
