MARTIN LUTHER KING, IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) BEFORE IT WAS TAKEN BY PLANE TO ATLANTA, GEORGIA. DR. KING -- PRINCIPAL ADVOCATE OF NON-VIOLENCE IN THE NEGRO CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT -- WAS SHOT DOWN BY A SNIPER AS HE STOOD ON THE BALCONY OF HIS MOTEL IN MEMPHIS ON THURSDAY NIGHT.

    THE REVEREND RALPH ABERNATHY, NAMED TO SUCCEED DR. KING AS HEAD OF THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, AND OTHER STAFF MEMBERS CONDUCTED A SHORT MEMORIAL SERVICE. DR. KING'S BODY WAS THEN PLACED IN ITS COFFIN IN A HEARSE FOR TRANSPORTATION TO THE AIRPORT. A TWO-MILE (3 KM) PROCESSION OF CARS FOLLOWED THE HEARSE TO THE AIRPORT.

    THE AIRCRAFT BEARING DR. KING'S BODY AND MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY ARRIVED IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. A LARGE CROWD WAS ON HAND TO MEET THE ARRIVAL AND TAKE PART IN THE FUNERAL PROCESSION.

    PRESIDENT JOHNSON HAS DECLARED TOMORROW A DAY OF NATIONAL MOURNING FOR DR. KING. HE'S CANCELLED HIS PROPOSED TRIP TO HAWAII AND ANNOUNCED HE WILL ADDRESS A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS ON MONDAY ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE.
