Background: Danville city police and Virginia state troopers broke up an anti-segregation march Sunday (28 July) about a block from the City Hall and arrested 77 demonstrators.
Those arrested were loaded into a hugh tractor-trailer truck and hauled away to jail.Police Chief Eugene McCain said the marchers were charged with two offenses...violating a Danville court injunction against demonstrations and a city ordnance forbidding parades without a permit.
The march started at the High Street Baptist Church...attended by Negroes...and proceeded about five blocks toward the center of town before police halted it.Many of the marchers were from neighbouring communities...brought in for the demonstration.
