Background: The United Nations Command yesterday (12 June) proposed to North Korea that the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas be gradually cleared of all military installations and armed military personnel. This, they claimed, would help to ease tension in Korea.

Over the past year the American-led United Nations Command and the North Koreans have repeatedly accused each other of bringing military installations and firearms into the demilitarised zone in serious violations of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

The latest meeting in the armistice town of Panmunjom was the 317th.

SYNOPSIS: The Korean armistice village of Panmunjom and the arrival on Saturday of the Chief United Nations negotiator, Major-General Felix Rogers for yet another meeting of the combined military armistice commission.

North Korea's Chief Negotiator, Major-General Young-Ok Han, arrives for the conference - the 317th since the war ended.

At this meeting, the United Nations Command proposed to North Korea that the demilitarised zone be gradually cleared of all military installations and armed military personnel. This, they claimed, would help to ease the tension in Korea.

The United Nations Command and North Korea have repeatedly accused each other of building military installations in the demilitarised zone during the past year. This would be in serious violation of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

At this latest meeting, the two sides discussed the latest proposal, and another that the land in the zone be returned to peaceful uses.

The North Korean negotiator described the proposals as a "drama of deceit" but did not directly reject them.
