United States peace envoy General Alexander Haig and the American Ambassador to South Vietnam, Mr. Ellsworth Bunker, left Saigon's Presidential Palace on Wednesday (17 January) afternoon after conferring with President Nguyan Van Thieu over terms to end the Vietnam war.
General Haig was later to make a three-hour trip to Phnom Penh to discuss progress towards peace with the Khmer government.
Meanwhile, throughout Saigon, thousands, of people stayed close to newspaper stands to read coverage of the latest developments. Others listened to portable radios to catch any news of peace.
Apart from a marked interest in proceedings, Saigon is still showing little signs of cheerfulness as speculation that a peace settlement is near continues to mount.
