  • Description

THE ISRAEL ARMY AND DEFENCE FORCES HAVE JUST COMPLETED A THREE-DAY EXERCISE IN THE NEGEV DESERT. THEY WERE VISITED AND REVIEWED ON THE FINAL DAY, MONDAY, BY PREMIER ESHKOL, WHO TOLD THEM THAT SHOULD A WAR BREAK OUT WITH ARAB COUNTRIES THEY WOULD HAVE TO CARRY THE FIGHT INTO ENEMY TERRITORY. THE ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER REFERRED TO PRESIDENT NASSER'S SPEECH LAST WEEK TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IN CAIRO, IN WHICH THE EGYPTIAN LEADER SPOKE OF HIS INTENTION TO HAVE A MILITARY SHOWDOWN WITH ISRAEL "AT SOME FUTURE DATE."
MORE THAN 10,000 TROOPS AND TWO THOUSAND VEHICLES - INCLUDING 200 TANKS - TOOK PART. AFTERWARDS THE ARMY CHIEF ANNOUNCED THAT SUCH MANOEUVRES WOULD NOW BE HELD AT REGULAR INTERVALS.

THE EXERCISE REACHED A CLIMAX ON THE THIRD AND FINAL DAY WITH A MASSIVE BREAK-THROUGH BY TANK UNITS SUPPORTED BY INFANTRY AND AN AIR FORCE "UMBRELLA". THE EXERCISE SERVED A THREEFOLD PURPOSE; TO TEST ISRAEL'S ABILITY TO DEPLOY THE LARGEST NUMBER OF TROOPS IN THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME; TO PROVIDE A REALISTIC TEST FOR RESERVE FORCES AS WELL AS REGULARS; AND FINALLY TO TEST SUPPLY PROBLEMS FOR BATTLE FOUGHT IN THE OPEN DESERT WITH MASSIVE TANK FORCES DEPLOYED AND AIR-COVER SUPPORT.

MAJOR-GENERAL RABIN, THE ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, SAID THE EXERCISE SHOWED THE EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE OF THE REGULARS AS WELL AS THE ABILITY OF THE RESERVISTS TO BE TRANSFORMED OVERNIGHT FROM CIVILIANS INTO FIGHTING UNITS.

(PRIME MINISTER ESHKOL WORE MILITARY UNIFORMS FOR THE VISIT - A FUR-COLLARED AIR FORCE STYLE JACKET AND A BLACK ARTILLERY CORPS BERET.)
