  • Description

In the Congo, Jan 11th, with a growing threat of civil war between pro-Lumumba and Katanga forces, General Sean McKeown of the Irish Republic took the salute at a parade in Leopoldville to mark his official installation as Supreme Commander of the United Nations Force in the Congo.

At the parade was Colonel Mobutu, who was making his first public appearance for two weeks, and whose power as a Congo leader is now said to be waning rapidly.

General McKeown emphasised that the United Nations force had a peaceful mission in the Congo, and called for soldierly discipline that would enable the force to carry through its "difficult and often thankless task". About 1,200 troops from Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, Canada, Pakistan, India, the Sudan, Indonesia and Malaya marched past the saluting base.
