Background: Mr. Cedric Turner is Chief Executive and General Manager of Australia's overseas airline, QANTAS. At 57 he has been a Senior Executive of the airline for 30 years on June 22.

Mr. Turner played a major part in the rapid postwar development of QANTAS including the re-equipment of the airline and the expansion of operations to the U.S.A., Japan, South Africa and - more recently - New Zealand.

He became the Company's Chief Executive and General Manager in July, 1955, after being appointed Assistant General Manager in 1946, and General Manager in 1951. He joined QANTAS in 1934 as Chief Accountant after experience in Australia, Britain and Europe.

QANTAS staff then totalled 30. Today it is about 6,900.

The Company's rapid postwar development included re-equipping the mainline fleet, firstly with 16 Super Constellations and then with 11 Boeing 707 Jets and 4 Electra International Mark IIs. The Boeing Jets are all equipped with turbo-fan engines which give improved range, speed and payload.

QANTAS has on order five more Boeing 707 Jets which will be delivered late in 1964 and three 32OCs in 1965.

The QANTAS network of now more than 100,000 unduplicated route miles now links Australia with 26 countries on five continents.

Mr. Turner finds his relaxation in golf. He lives with his wife and four children in Turramurra, Sydney. He was one of the leading figures in the negotiations with the United States and United Kingdom authorities which gained rights for the QANTAS "round-the-world" service across the United States.

Mr. Turner was awarded the C.B.E. for service to International Airlines.
