THE ROCKET, A LAMBDA-3, IS THE LARGEST ROCKET LAUNCHED SO FAR IN JAPAN. THE 60 FEET-LONG (20 METRES) ROCKET WAS LAUNCHED FROM A RESEARCH STATION AT CAPE UCHINOURA ON KYUSHU ISLAND. ALL THREE STAGES FIRED PERFECTLY AND THE ROCKET REACHED A HEIGHT OF 620 MILES (1,000 KILOMETRES) BEFORE IT RE-ENTERED THE ATMOSPHERE AND FELL INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

THE RESEARCH TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT BY MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTE OF PRODUCTIVITY FROM TOKYO UNIVERSITY. THE PROGRESS OF THE ROCKET WAS TRACKED BY A GIANT RADAR ANTENNA DEVELOPED BY THE UNIVERSITY.
