Background: Sixty-three runners from nine countries - Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Holland, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Yugoslavia - participated in the annual cross-country contest filmed by Visnews at Hannut. Belgium, Feb. 1.

Britain, Holland and Germany each had five competitors at the start. Morocco's entry was Ben Aissa, Portugal's - for the first time - Manuel Faria. Favourites were Britain's formidable team of Perkins, North, Anderson, Norris and Driver, the Belgian Vandewattyne and France's Mimoun. The English had carried the day in 1954 and the three following years with Norris winning in 1954 and 1957. Frenchman Mimoun had booked ??? success in Spain only the Previous Sunday.

From the start it was Belgian Vandewattyne who took the lead. Lap after lap of the 9,800 metre obstacle course he kept his position unchallenged. Close on his heels at first, North fell back later and Mimoun moved into second place. The it was North again till Mimoun came up in a renewed effort.

In the sixth and seventh laps Vanderwattyne was still leading with Mimoun second and in this order they crossed the finishing line. Perkins took third place.
