YAMBO OUOLOGUEM, A 28-YEAR-OLD MALIEN WRITER AND SCHOLAR, WAS TODAY (MONDAY) AWARDED FRANCE'S SECOND MAJOR LITERARY PRIZE -- THE PRIX THEOPHRASTE RENADOUT -- FOR HIS FIRST BOOK "THE DUTY OF VIOLENCE". THE PRIX RENADOUT IS TRADITIONALLY AWARDED BY JOURNALISTS COVERING THE PRIX GUNCOURT, THE COUNTRY'S TOP LITERARY PRIZE.

THE WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S PRIX RENADOUT WAS ANNOUNCED IN A RESTAURANT IN PARIS.

A MEMBERS OF THE RENADOUT JURY SAID LATER THAT OUOLOGUEM RANKED AMONG THE LEADING CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS. HE HAS ALSO ESTABLISHED A REPUTATION AS A BRILLIANT STUDENT AT PARIS UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE IS PREPARING A SOCIOLOGY THESIS.

OUOLOGUEM'S 200-PAGE BOOK TRACES AN AFRICAN DYNASTY FROM PRIMITIVE TO INDEPENDENCE, TOUCHING ON COLONIALISM AND NEO-COLONIALISM AS IT DOES SO. ONE JURY MEMBER DESCRIBED IT AS "AN ABSOLUTE EYE-OPENER".
