    OFFICERS OF THE KATANGA FORCES RECENTLY ALLOWED A GROUP OF JOURNALISTS TO VISIT THE IRISH TROOPS THEY CAPTURED AFTER A HARD BATTLE DURING THE FIGHTING BETWEEN PRESIDENT TSHOMBE AND THE UNITED NATIONS. THE IRISH SOLDIERS ARE BEING HELD IN A FARMHOUSE NEAR ELISABETHVILLE.

    CARE WAS TAKEN BY THE KATANGANS TO SHOW THE FRIENDLY RELATIONS THAT NOW EXISTS BETWEEN THE 26 IRISHMEN AND THE KATANGA PARATROOPERS. THE SMALL IRISH FORCE WAS SURROUNDED AND ATTACKED FOR SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THEIR ARMOURED CAR AND TWO TROOP CARRIERS WERE DESTROYED.

    AFTER THEIR SURRENDER THEY WERE TREATED WITH ALL THE HONOURS OF WAR. A RED CROSS OFFICER WAS ALLOWED TO VISIT THEN AND HE REPORTED THEY WERE IN GOOD HEALTH. SIMILAR GOOD TREATMENT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THE IRISH GARRISON OF THE UNITED NATIONS WHO WERE CAPTURED AT JADOTVILLE.
