  • Description

In Washington the House of Representatives yesterday (Thursday) voted by a majority of 14 against continuing to approve funds requested by the Nixon Administration to build two SSTs (supersonic transports).

Since the Senate passed a similar vote in December the U.S. aerospace industry and labour unions have mounted a big publicity campaign to counter charges that SSTs will pollute the atmosphere and cause excessive noise. The Senate is expected to vote on the issue again next week.

After yesterday's vote, Congressmen who led the debate gave their views Representative Sidney Yates (Democrat, Illinois) who introduced the amendment, speaks first, followed by Rep. Gerald Ford, Republican minority leader in the House.
