  • Description

Four people were killed when an avalanche of snow engulfed a holiday cabin near Seattle, United States, on 24th January. Throughout the state of Washington, many roads have been closed by snow-drifts following heavy snow storms. Cars have been buried in the snow. In some places the roofs of houses have collapsed under the weight of the snow.

The avalanche, in a ski resort near Seattle, engulfed a holiday cabin with ten people inside it. Rescuers pulled six of them to safety. A girl whose parents were both killed said that she and her sister were protected by a rigid bedhead which held firm despite the pressure of the snow.

A weather spokesman said that there had been so many snow avalanches in the area that they had not been able to cope with them. One of them was 200 yards wide and 60 feet deep.
