    BERNARD FORD AND DIANA TOWLER, THE BRITISH SKATING CHAMPIONS, TONIGHT (THURSDAY) RETAINED THEIR WORLD TITLE IN THE DANCING EVENT OF THE WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN VIENNA.

    THE BRITISH PAIR HAD NINE PLACEMENTS AND A TOTAL OF 256.8 POINTS. JOHN CARREL AND LORNA DYER WON THE SILVER MEDAL WITH 12 PLACEMENTS AND 252.1 POINTS. MALCOLM CANNON AND YVONNE SUDDICK, ANOTHER BRITISH PAIR, WERE THIRD WITH 21 PLACEMENTS AND 245.5 POINTS. AND, IN FOURTH POSITION WAS ANOTHER BRITISH PAIR, JON LANE AND JANET SAWBRIDGE.

    THE BRITISH WINNERS DANCED TO THE MUSIC OF THE FILM 'ZORBA, THE GREEK'. THEIR PERFORMANCE WAS DESCRIBED AS BRILLIANT, WITH A DISPLAY OF HARMONY AND JOINT CONTROL. THE COUPLE HAVE HELD THE WORLD TITLE FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, ALTHOUGH MR. FORD IS ONLY AGED 19 AND HIS PARTNER 20. THEY FIRST WON THE BRITISH TITLE IN 1956.

    ELEVEN NATIONS COMPETED IN THE EVENT.
