  • Description

The Turkish navy school ship 'Savarona' which was once the yacht of the founder of the Republic of Turkey Kemal Ataturk, was seriously damaged when it caught fire on Wednesday (3 October) off Heybeli Island.

SYNOPSIS: It is not yet known what caused the fire--and sabotage has not been ruled out. The ship was moored off Heybeli Island where it was being used by the Turkish Navy as a training ship for naval officers.

The "Savarona" belonged originally to a wealthy American and was sold to Turkey in 1938 where it was used as a presidential yacht until 1951. Kemal Ataturk, the founding father of the Republic of Turkey and its first president, made use of it for a short time until his death in November 1938. After that other Turkish presidents continued to make use of it.

Although the "Savarona" was turned over to the Turkish navy in 1951 part of the ship was turned into a museum containing some of Ataturk's belongings. Ataturk was a reformer and was also the first leader to introduce secular schools and move away from Moslem law. He is widely considered to have been responsible for the Westernisation of Turkish life.
