  • Description

DESPITE INTERNAL STRIFE, INDONESIA IS CONTINUING HER POLICY OF CONFRONTATION WITH MALAYSIA. LAST WEEK A BATTALION OF 700 REGULAR TROOPS AND VOLUNTEERS SAILED FROM DJAKARTA - THE CAPITAL - TO THE INDONESIAN TERRITORIES BORDERING ON SABAH AND SARAWAK, THE OUTLAYING STATES OF MALAYSIA.

SOME OF THE BATTALION BOARDING THE TROOPSHIP "VENDERS" AT DJAKARTA WERE FORMER MEMBERS OF THE DIPONEGRO DIVISION. ONE BATTALION OF THE DIPONEGRO DIVISION SIDED WITH LIEUTENANT-COLONEL UNTUNG IN HIS UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO BRING OFF A COUP AGAINST PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S REGIME ON OCTOBER 1ST. SOME MEMBERS OF THE DIVISION ARE STILL FIGHTING WITH THE COMMUNISTS AGAINST GOVERNMENT FORCES IN CENTRAL JAVA.

BEFORE THEY BOARDED THE SHIP, THE MEN RECEIVED A CEREMONIAL SEND-OFF FROM THE COMMANDER OF THE VOLUNTEER BRIGADE, COLONEL MAHMUD PASHA, AND A GROUP OF TRADITIONAL JAVANESE DANCERS. COLONEL PASHA TOLD THE MEN THAT ALTHOUGH THE ABORTIVE COUP HAD PRODUCED TROUBLE AT HOME, THE MAIN STRUGGLE AGAINST BRITISH MALAYSIA MUST BE CONTINUED.

THE DEPUTY PREMIER OF INDONESIA SAID AT THE WEEKEND THAT ANY MALAYSIAN SPECULATION THAT CONFRONTATION WOULD END BECAUSE OF THE ATTEMPTED COUP WAS UNFOUNDED. HE SAID THE"IMPERIALISTS" IN WASHINGTON AND LONDON SHOULD TAKE NOTE THAT, WITH OR WITHOUT THE P.K.I. (INDONESIAN COMMUNIST PARTY), MALAYSIA WOULD BE CRUSHED.

(A STATE OF MARTIAL LAW NOW EXISTS IN CENTRAL JAVA - WHERE GOVERNMENT ARE FACING FIERCE OPPOSITION FROM ARMED COMMUNISTS. THERE ARE REPORTS TOO OF FIGHTING IN THE CELEBES).
