  • Description

THE FIRST AGRICULTURAL SHOW TO BE HELD IN GHANA SINCE DR. KWAME NKRUMAH AND HIS GOVERNMENT WAS REMOVED IN FEBRUARY 1966 OPENED AT WINNEBA LAST SATURDAY (19 AUGUST). OPENING CEREMONIES WERE PERFORMED BY THE COMMISSIONER FOR AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY, MR. J.O. TORTO.

SPEAKING AT THE CEREMONY MR. TORTO SAID THAT APART FROM THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL VALUES THAT WERE INHERENT IN AGRICULTURAL SHOWS, THEY ALSO PROMOTED HEALTHY COMPETITION AMONG FARMERS AND ALL THOSE CONNECTED WITH FARMING.

THE SHOW WHICH COVERED A TEN-ACRE (FOUR HECTARES) SITE, WAS ORGANISED BY THE EXTENSION DIVISION OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE.

MR. TORTO ANNOUNCED THAT HIS MINISTRY WAS PLANNING TO HOLD A NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SHOW. HE SAID FARMING WAS NO LONGER AN INCIDENT INVOLVING NATURE AND THE FARMER BUT A HIGHLY SPECIALISED BUSINESS IN WHICH MANY AGENCIES PARTICIPATED.

THE COMMISSIONER, ACCOMPANIED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CENTRAL REGION COMMITTEE OF ADMINISTRATION, BRIGADIER CRABBE, THE PRESIDENT OF THE CENTRAL REGION HOUSE OF CHIEFS, NANA AKYIN THE SIXTH, AND OFFICIALS FROM THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, TOURED THE SHOW GROUND TO INSPECT THE VARIOUS STANDS.
