One way of getting rid of an old church is to blow it up with dynamite. This was the method used for the demolition recently of a church at Saas-fee, Valais, which had become too small for the congregation and was falling into a bad state of disrepair.
Swiss soldiers carefully laid charges of dynamite round the old church walls; church bells, hung in a temporary campanile nearby rang out a warning of the explosion, and seconds later the walls were a heap of rubble on the ground.
Next it was the turn of the steeple. Dynamite charges were again put in position, and the entire steeple was cleanly felled, coming to earth within inches of the place where the demolition men planned it should fall.
Afterwards, when the villagers had seen the old familiar church wiped out in a matter of minutes, the curate thanked the soldiers and congratulated them on their success. A bigger and better church is to be build on the site of the old one, which dated from 1894.
