  • Description

MR LU HSU-CHANG, VICE-MINISTER OF TRADE IN THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC, SPENT TODAY (MONDAY) TOURING THE PORT OF LONDON - THE LARGEST IN THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH. WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CHINESE GOODWILL MISSION NOW VISITING BRITAIN, MR LU WAS A GUEST OF THE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY. THIS CONTROLS SHIPPING AND STORAGE FACILITIES ALONG 70 MILES OF THE RIVER THAMES, IN WHICH THERE ARE FIVE MAJOR DOCK SYSTEMS COVERING AN AREA OF 4,000 ACRES.

THE CHINESE DELEGATION STARTED THE DAY BY INSPECTING THE ROYAL DOCKS. TAKING UP TO 56 SHIPS, THESE FORM ONE OF THE LARGEST ARTIFICIAL ENCLOSED WATER AREAS IN THE WORLD. THEIR 230 CRANES HANDLE MAINLY FROZEN MEATS, MACHINERY AND MOTOR CARS. ACCOMPANIED BY AN INTERPRETER AND GUIDE, MR LU WALKED THROUGH THE VAST STORAGE SHEDS AND THEN WAS TAKEN BY CAR TO BOARD A TUG FOR A TRIP ON THE RIVER THAMES. SHIPS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD EACH YEAR CARRY SOME 75 MILLIONS TONS OF GOODS IN AND OUT OF LONDON.

INTERRUPTING THE RIVER TOUR, MR LU WENT TO THE BOARD OF TRADE BUILDING IN CARLTON GARDENS FOR A LUNCHEON GIVEN IN HIS HONOUR BY MR FREDERICK ERROLL, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD. THE TWO MEN HAVE ALREADY HELD TWO PRIVATE MEETINGS.

AFTER THE LUNCHEON, THE CHINESE DELEGATION PAID A VISIT TO THE BRITISH ELECTRONICS FIRM OF DECCA RADAR LIMITED, WHICH HAS SUPPLIED METEOROLOGICAL RADAR EQUIPMENT TO THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC. THEN MR LU AND HIS PARTY WERE TAKEN FOR A RIVER CRUISE ON THE COMPANY'S LAUNCH "NAVIGATOR" WHICH THEY BOARDED AT LAMBETH PIER. FAMOUS LONDON LANDMARKS THEY SAW ALONG THE RIVER INCLUDED THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT, SEAT OF BRITISH GOVERNMENT; THE HISTORIC TOWER OF LONDON, DATING FROM THE 11TH CENTURY; AND THE ADJOURNING TOWER BRIDGE. THE DAY ENDED WITH A RECEPTION BY THE SINO-BRITISH TRADE COUNCIL.
