    More than 400 Greek and Turkish Cypriot prisoners of war were exchanged in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, on Monday (21 October)- ending a three-day exchange operation.

    The prisoners had been held for three months after the Turkish invasion in July. In the exchanges with started on Saturday (19 October) more than 1,000 prisoners were freed.

    The exchanges took place outside the Ledra Palace Hotel where a United Nations Command Post has been set up.

    Thousands of people looking for relatives crowded the streets on both sides of the "Green Line" which divides Greeks and Turks in Nicosia.

    The exchanges came three weeks after the first batch of able-bodied prisoners were released in Nicosia.

    The Greek Cypriot prisoners were brought from detention centres in Southern turkey, while the Turkish Cypriots came from Limassol in south-western Cyprus.

    Monday's exchange was the last of a three-day exchange operation which started on Saturday when about six-hundred-and-fifty prisoners were freed.

    Three hundred and twenty on turkish Cypriot prisoners were freed on Monday-along with on hundred and forty-five Greek Cypriots. During the three-days, more than one thousand prisoners were released.

    Later in the day, Greek and Turkish Cypriots exchanged machinegun, mortar and rifle fire for an hour along the "Green Line". The shooting ended with a ceasefire shortly before midnight. It was the first incident of its kind along the line for three weeks.
