  • Description

RAUNO AALTONEN, 28-YEAR-OLD RALLY ACE FROM FINLAND AND THIS YEAR'S WINNER OF THE MONTE CARLO RALLY ARRIVED BACK IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY). WITH HIM WERE CO-DRIVER HENRY LIDDON OF BRITAIN AND THE LITTLE B.M.C. MINI-COOPER WHICH HE DROVE TO VICTORY. AALTONEN'S WINNING TIME WAS LESS THAT 12 SECONDS, MAKING IT ONE OF THE CLOSEST FINISHES IN THE 56 YEARS HISTORY OF THE RALLY.

AALTONEN'S SUCCESS GAVE THE MINI-COOPERS THEIR THIRD WIN IN THE 3,000 MILE (5,000 KILOMETRES) RALLY IN FOUR YEARS. THE ONLY OCCASION IN THAT PERIOD THAT A MINI FAILED TO WIN WAS LAST YEAR WHEN THEY WERE DISQUALIFIED ON A LIGHTING TECHNICALITY AFTER BEING SET TO TAKE THE FIRST THREE PLACES.

KNOWN AS THE FLYING FINN, AALTONEN, A GARAGE PROPRIETOR, SNATCHED VICTORY THROUGH A TREMENDOUS EFFORT ON THE FINAL SPEED TEST OVER SNOW-COVERED ROADS IN THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE MONACO. HE WAS THIRD IN THE RALLY IN 1965 AND DISQUALIFIED LAST YEAR WHEN LYING SECOND. LIDDON WAS WITH IRISHMAN PADDY HOPKIRK IN THE WINNING MINI-COOPER IN 1964.
