  • Description

Belgium's Liege-Bastogne-Liege 155-mile Cycle Race - a challenge to champions since its inception in 1890 - was won this year by Dutch ace Geldermans, May 8.

Intense heat made the going difficult, but at Bastogne - World War Two battlefield in the hilly Ardennes country - Forrestier (No. 80 France) had established a 7-minute lead over his nearest rival. Then Van Looy (No. 64 Belgium) put on pressure, and soon 18 riders were bunched in front. Forty miles from Liege, at Spa, Geldermans (No. 134) winner of last week's Tour of Germany, burst into the lead, lengthened his advantage on Malchamps Hill - last stiff climb on the course - and rode into Brussels, 2 minutes 10 seconds ahead of Everaert (No. 133 France) - winner of the recent Paris-Brussels race, Planckaert (No. 154 Belgium) and Van Looy who out-sprinted Graczyk (No. 82 France) for fourth place.
