    A MASS PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF DAR-ES-SALAAM YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN SUPPORT OF TANGANYIKA'S PRESIDENT NYERERE ENDED WITH A RALLY AT WHICH THE PRESIDENT SPOKE IN THE OPEN FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE LAST MONTH'S MUTINY BY SOLDIERS OF THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES.

    THE PROCESSION AND RALLY WAS ORGANISED BY THE MAYOR OF DAR-ES-SALAAM, MR. KIRUNDI. A HUGE CROWD OF AFRICANS AND ASIANS PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS WAVING PLACARDS PROCLAIMING LOYALTY TO PRESIDENT NYERERE.

    AT THE MZIMBAZEE PLAYING GROUNDS, WHERE THE PROCESSION ENDED, TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE HAD GATHERED TO HEAR THE PRESIDENT SPEAK. THE RALLY BEGAN WITH A SPEECH BY MR. KIRUNDI, THE MAYOR. DURING HIS SPEECH PRESIDENT NYERERE SPOKE ABOUT THE ARMY REVOLT LAST MONTH - A REVOLT HE DESCRIBED AS "DISGRACEFUL AND DAMAGING TO TANGANYIKA'S REPUTATION". HOWEVER, HE WAS FOR THE MOST PART IN A RELAXED MOOD AND INTERSPERSED HIS REMARKS WITH JOKES.

    (MEANWHILE, AT THE REQUEST OF PRESIDENT NYERERE, THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY HAS BEEN MEETING IN DAR-ES-SALAAM TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION WHICH HAS ARISEN SINCE LAST MONTH'S MUTINIES IN TANGANYIKA, UGANDA AND KENYA. AT THE OPENING OF THE CONFERENCE, THE PRESIDENT SPOKE OF THE "GRAVE DANGERS THE MUTINIES POSED NOT ONLY TO THIS AREA BUT ALSO THE WHOLE OF OUR CONTINENT."
    HE EXPRESSED CONCERN AT HAVING TO CALL BRITISH TROOPS TO TANGANYIKA FOR, HE SAID "THE PRESENCE OF TROOPS FROM A COUNTRY INVOLVED IN THE 'COLD WAR' HAD SERIOUS IMPLICATIONS FOR NON-ALIGNMENT." PRESIDENT NYERERE SCOFFED AT THE IDEA THAT THE MUTINIES REPRESENTED A SPEARHEAD OF A POPULAR REVOLT.)
