  • Description

Princess Alexandra of Kent was among the many distinguished guests attending a reception, Dec 10, at Australia House, London, to honour the centenary of Queensland - Australia's youngest State.

Agent-General for Queensland, D.J.Muir, who gave the reception, said that on Dec 10, 1859, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the first Governor, arrived in Brisbane to read the proclamation of Her Majesty the Queen, formally establishing Queensland as a self-governing colony. At this time Queensland had a population of only 28,000. Today its people number over 1 1/2 million and its 667,000 square miles are capable of supporting many more.

The 400 guess received by the Agent-General and Mrs Muir included Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone; the Governor-General Designate of Australia and Lady Dunrossil; the High Commissioner for Australia and Lady Harrison; and many other notabilities.

Princess Alexandra and Princess Alice have both seen Queensland at first hand this year. Princess Alexandra toured Queensland for three weeks last August during the State's centenary celebrations, while the Countess of Athlone spent a number of weeks there on a private visit to her son-in-law, the Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith.
