  • Description

REMBRANDT'S 1653 PAINTING OF "ARISTOTLE CONTEMPLATING THE BUST OF HOMER" FETCHED 2,300,000 DOLLARS OR GBP821,100 - BELIEVED TO BE THE HIGHEST PRICE EVER GIVEN FOR AN OLD MASTER - WHEN THE ART COLLECTION OF THE LATE AMERICAN ADVERTISING MAGNATE ALFRED ERICKSON CAME UNDER THE HAMMER AT THE EXCLUSIVE PARKE-BERNET AUCTION GALLERY IN NEW YORK, NOV 15.

A GLITTERING CROWD OF INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITIES CRAMMED THE MAIN SALEROOM, AND MANY MORE WATCHED PROCEEDINGS ON CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION, AS AUCTIONEER LOUIS MARION FACED A BATTERY OF MICROPHONES AT THE OPENING OF THE SALE AT 8 PM.

BIDDING FOR THE REMBRANDT STARTED AT ONE MILLION DOLLARS - AN ADVANCE BID POSTED BY "A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL". SEVERAL BUYERS IMMEDIATELY ENTERED INTO A HEATED CONTEST, AND THE PRICE JUMPED UP BY 100,000 DOLLARS AND MORE PER SECOND. NOT UNTIL IT HAD SOARED TO 2,200,000 DOLLARS DID THE AUCTIONEER ACCEPT 50,000-DOLLARS BIDS.

WHEN AFTER 3 1/2 MINUTES THE TOTAL REACHED 2,300,000 DOLLARS, MR. MARION PAUSED TO LOOK AT THE LAST BIDDER AND SAID: "I AM SURE, SIR, YOU HAVE ANOTHER BID IN YOU." BUT THERE WAS NO REPLY, AND AS THE CROWD ROSE TO CLAP AND CHEER IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE WINNER WAS NEW YORK'S ILLUSTRIOUS METROPOLITAN MUSEUM AND THAT THE RUNNER-UP HAD BEEN ANOTHER WELL-KNOWN PUBLIC GALLERY.

ALTOGETHER, THE ERICKSON COLLECTION OF 24 PAINTINGS REALISED 4,679,250 DOLLARS - ABOUT GBP1,671,160. MR. ERICKSON DIED IN 1936; THE RECENT DEATH OF HIS WIDOW PROMPTED THE AUCTION.
