Background: Israeli and Syrian conditions for were still believed to be far apart on Friday (17 May) -- so United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger's peace mission faces a temporary halt.

On Friday the American negotiating team introduced its own ideas for the first time into talks with the Israeli negotiating committee. But a member of the team said it was most likely Dr. Kissinger would give up his negotiations for a few weeks. He said both sides had promised to freeze their positions until negotiations resumed.

Dr. Kissinger was expected to make one last round trip to the Syrian capital Damascus and back to Jerusalem on Saturday (18th May) before leaving for Egypt on his way back to the United States.

The main problem is believed to be the position of the demarcation line between Israeli and Syrian troops on the Golan Heights, where both sides have recently been involved in fresh artillery exchanges.

During Friday, Dr. Kissinger deplored the loss of innocent life in Lebanon from Israeli reprisal air attacks for the previous day's massacre of Israeli schoolchildren -- but he did not directly criticise Israel. Dr. Kissinger said the American government was concerned that such cycles of violence would undermine the search for a Middle East peace.
