  • Description

BRITISH TROOPS ON THE MOVE IN KENYA'S ARID NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT AT THE END OF THE FOUR-DAY MILITARY EXERCISE, "OPERATION SHARP PANGA". THE EXERCISE, ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVER CARRIED OUT BY THE BRITISH ARMY IN EAST AFRICA, ENDED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) BUT NOT BEFORE THERE HAD BEEN PROTESTS FROM NEIGHBOURING SOMALIA. LAST SUNDAY STONE-THROWING SOMALIS MARCHED AGAINST THE BRITISH EMBASSY IN MOGADISHU. THE DEMONSTRATORS DEMANDED THAT THE NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT, POPULATED PREDOMINANTLY BY SOMALI TRIBESMEN, SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SECEDE AND JOIN THE SOMALI REPUBLIC.

MORE THAN 4,200 TROOPS WERE INVOLVED IN THE EXERCISE, INCLUDING DETACHMENTS FROM ADEN, AN R.A.F. CANBERRA SQUADRON FROM CYPRUS AND THE KENYA POLICE AIR WING. THE OBJECT OF THE EXERCISES, ACCORDING TO BRIGADIER D.W. JACKSON, CHIEF OF STAFF, EAST AFRICA COMMAND, WAS TO GIVE THE TROOPS EXPERIENCE OF OPERATIONS IN A "NON-NUCLEAR LIMITED WAR SETTING" AS WELL AS GETTING ACCLIMATED TO SEMI-DESERT COUNTRY.

HOWEVER, THE SOMALI REPUBLIC'S VICE-CONSUL IN KENYA, ABULKADIR MUSSA, SAID THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT COULD NOT HAVE CHOSEN A MORE SIGNIFICANT AND PROVOCATIVE TIME AND PLACE TO CARRY OUT MILITARY MANOEUVRES.
