  • Description

Three United Nations diplomats who entered Portuguese Guinea despite Portuguese Government protests last week, said yesterday (April 12) that the Portuguese stepped up military activity to deter them.

Leader of the team Horacio Sevilla-Borja of Ecuador said he and UN delegates from Sweden and Tunisia spent more than 130 hours in "liberated areas" of the West African colony, and saw the United Nations symbol flown over schools, camps and cultivated areas.

Senor Sevilla-Borja called it "an unprecedented happening".

It is believed to be the first move by UN representatives into territory claimed by a member state, in violation of that state's wishes.

The diplomats were assigned to the mission by the United Nations Special Committee on Colonialism now holding a series of meetings in Africa.

After reports were delivered to the committee in Conakry the Secretary-General of the Guinea Nationalist Movement Amilcar Cabral (PAIGC) said most of Portuguese Guinea had now been liberated, and praised the United Nations officials for going to see for themselves.

A spokesman for the Portuguese Government emphatically denied that Portuguese Guinea had been entered by the team. They were hoaxed by the Nationalists - he said - and taken for a walk along the border: on the Guinea side.
