    CEYLON'S NEW PARLIAMENT WAS CEREMONIOUSLY OPENED IN COLOMBO YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). SOON AFTER THE CEREMONY, THE 55-MEMBER OPPOSITION, LED BY MRS. SIRIMAVO BANDARANAIKE, THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER, WALKED OUT OF THE HOUSE IN PROTEST AT THE ALLOCATION OF THREE OPPOSITION FRONT BENCH SEATS TO GOVERNMENT MEMBERS BY THE SPEAKER, SIR ALBERT PEIRIS. THEY LATER RETURNED TO THE CHAMBER.

    IN HIS SPEECH FROM THE THRONE. THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, MR. WILLIAM GOPALLAWA, SAID THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ELIMINATE CORRUPTION, MISMANAGEMENT AND NEPOTISM IN NATIONALISED UNDERTAKINGS. NATIONALISED UNDERTAKINGS WOULD STAY NATIONALISED, HE ADDED.

    HE SAID THE GOVERNMENT WOULD SUPPORT MOVES TOWARDS GENERAL AND COMPLETE DISARMAMENT WITH THE NECESSARY SAFEGUARDS AND WOULD OPPOSED THE SPREAD OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS. WHILE BUDDHISM WOULD BE GIVEN ITS PROPER PLACE, THE GOVERNMENT WOULD RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF THOSE WHO PROFESSED OTHER FAITHS.

    (ON THURSDAY (8 APRIL), THE GOVERNMENT HAD ASKED COMMUNIST COUNTRIES TO REDUCE THEIR CONSULAR STAFF IN CEYLON).
