  • Description

In India, thousands of people -- many from remote villages -- poured into the city of Calcutta on Sunday (26 June) for a rally celebrating the victory of the Left Front in the recent West Bengal State Assembly elections.

SYNOPSIS: This was the first mass gathering in Calcutta since the ending of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's state of emergency and the subsequent general election which brought Mr. Morarji Desai's Janata Party to power. Elsewhere in India the Janata Party did well in the regional State Assembly elections, but in West Bengal it was the Marxist-Communist Left Front which triumphed.

The leader of the Marxist-Communist alliance is Mr. Jyoti Basu and following the State Assembly elections he was appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal. Addressing Sunday's rally he warned the Indian middle classes that the right to strike is the "ultimate weapon in the hands of the working class".

Responding to the enthusiasm of his audience Mr. Basu added that he hoped industrialists would see to it that the need to use that weapon did not arise. He told the rally that the Left Front victory had aroused the aspirations of "not only the people of West Bengal, but of the entire country". Mr. Basu also emphasised the responsibility involved.

Before the rally representatives of the six constituent parties of the Left Front laid wreaths at a martyrs column, with Mr. Basu placing one on behalf of the new state Cabinet. Prayers were said for the long life of the Left Front government.
