Background: About eight inches (20 cms) of snow fell on New York on Wednesday (12 February), during the worst storm to hit the city this winter.
A snow emergency was declared and some streets were restricted to vehicles with chains or snow tyres. The icy conditions caused scores of minor traffic incidents and some New Yorkers got out their skis -- a less conventional, but at the moment perhaps more suitable, form of city transportation.
La Guardia airport in New York was closed to commercial air traffic and the storm caused delays at Kennedy International airport.
The snowstorm, accompanied by gusty winds and below-freezing temperatures, disrupted road, rail and air traffic over the eastern United States from West Virginia to Massachusetts.
