Background: Senegal's representative at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said on Tuesday (18 May) that firm action must be taken to change international economic relations.

Louis Alexandrenne, Senegal's Minister of Industrial Development and the Environment, said that the first UNCTAD meeting raised great hopes, but these were not justified by the second and third meetings.

He went on to say that this fourth UNCTAD session came at a crucial time, as the world's rich and poor nations tried to co-operate on economic relations.

However, such wishes when expressed in the past had simply been put off he said. All the efforts of recent years would be wasted unless concrete and precise decisions were made immediately to change the international economic order.

Senegal's call came at a time when many countries have warned that a failure to reach agreement on this point may threaten world peace, as poorer nations see the gap between themselves and the richer ones widening.

The 'Group of 77' developing nations met in the Philippines in February to discuss a collective stand at the fourth UNCTAD session. They agreed that developed countries should help the poorer countries to improve their industries and make full use of their natural resources.
