  • Description

MALAYSIA CELEBRATED ITS INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY ON SUNDAY (AUGUST 31) IN A QUIET BUT TENSE ATMOSPHERE.

EVERYTHING WAS PEACEFUL IN KUALA LUMPUR DESPITE RUMOURS OF IMPENDING TROUBLE. CHINESE VEGETABLE DEALERS CALLED OFF THEIR SUNDAY HOLIDAY TO CONDUCT THEIR BUSINESS UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF ARMED POLICEMEN.

UNLIKE PREVIOUS YEARS, THIS YEAR'S CELEBRATIONS WERE RESTRAINED BECAUSE OF THE EMERGENCY FOLLOWING THE OUTBREAK OF RACIAL VIOLENCE. THE ONLY OFFICIAL FUNCTION WAS AN EVENING RECEPTION AT THE TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN HALL IN KUALA LUMPUR.

THE RECEPTION WAS ATTENDED BY THE MALAYSIAN KING AND QUEEN, PRIME MINISTER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, HIS DEPUTY, TUN ABDUL RAZAK, THE ARMED FORCES CHIEF, GENERAL BIDIN, MINISTER FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS TUN SAMBATHAN, HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER DR. ISMAIL, FORMER FINANCE MINISTER TUN TAN SIEW SIN, MEMBERS OF DIPLOMATIC CORPS AND MEMBERS OF THE GOODWILL COMMITTEES, WHO HAVE WORKED TOWARDS REPAIRING RACE RELATIONS SINCE THE MAY RIOTS.
