  • Description

SEVENTY MILES OFF THE COAST OF SINGAPORE SHIPS OF THE BRITISH NAVY, ON ROUTINE PATROL, WERE PRACTISING TARGET SHOOTING WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN CALLED ON A DESTROYER RECENTLY.

THE TARGET IS A MINIATURE AIRCRAFT, POWERED BY A 72 HORSEPOWER PISTON ENGINE, AND CAPABLE OF A SPEED OF 200 KNOTS.ITS FLYING RANGE IS ABOUT TEN MILES.WITH A WING-PAN OF LITTLE MORE THAN 13 FEET (4 METRES), THE LOW FLYING AIRCRAFT PRESENTS A TARGET SIMILAR TO THAT OF AN ENEMY FIGHTER PLANE HIGH IN THE SKY.

THE TARGET IS LAUNCHED FROM A ROCKET AND THEM, IF IT ISN'T HIT FIRST, CAN FLY FOR AN HOUR, CONTROLLED BY RADIO FROM THE SHIP.

WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN WAS ABOARD THE DESTROYER THE LITTLE TARGET AIRCRAFT DIDN'T LAST VERY LONG.BUT WHEN IT WAS HIT, ALL WAS NOT LOST, FOR A REMOTE CONTROLLED PARACHUTE CAME BILLOWING OUT OF THE COCKPIT.WHAT REMAINED OF A TARGET FLOATED GENTLY DOWN TO SEA AND THE NAVY WAS THERE TO RESCUE IT.
