  • Description

One of London Zoo's most celebrated citizens is back home. She's a baby gorilla, with the unlikely name of Salome, ad she's spent the past eleven months with other gorillas at a zoo on Jersey, one of the Channel Islands.

SYNOPSIS: Salome's birthplace, the London zoo in Regents Park, was one of the first of the world's modern zoos. When it was founded in 1826 by Sir Stamford Raffles, the man who also founded Singapore as a British colony, the main aim was to house animals for close study by scientists. Now another, perhaps more important, function has been found: to save endangered species from extinction.

The world's major zoos have had to learn how to breed animals in captivity, because an increasing range of species are in danger of extinction in the wild. Salome, born in July 1976, was the first Lowland gorilla born at London zoo, and she's back home after learning how to relate to other gorillas at Jersey. Salome's companion is Kumba, a young male gorilla born at Jersey zoo. Young animals need company of their own kind if they are to grow into well-adjusted adults
