    "ABLE SEAMAN....I UNDERSTAND YOU WERE THE FIRST MAN TO SEE THE PUFFIN FLOATING IN THE SEA".



    SEAMAN: "YES I WAS".



    INTERVIEWER: "WHEN DID YOU SEE IT?"



    SEAMAN: "1730, FRIDAY NIGHT".



    INTERVIEWER: "DID YOU KNOW IT WAS AN UNTURNED ROWING BOAT?".



    SEAMAN: "NO I DIDN'T, I JUST REPORTED THERE WAS AN OBJECT IN THE WATER".



    INTERVIEWER: "DID YOU KNOW THERE WAS A SEARCH GOING ON FOR THE PUFFIN AT THIS TIME?"



    SEAMAN: "NO I DIDN'T. I'D NEVER HEARD OF THE PUFFIN BEFORE".



    INTERVIEWER: "WHO DID YOU REPORT YOUR SIGHTING TO?".



    SEAMAN: "THE OFFICER OF THE WATCH".



    INTERVIEWER: "WHAT HAPPENED THEN?"



    SEAMAN: "HE REPORTED TO THE CAPTAIN AND ASKED TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AND THE CAPTAIN CAME UP HIMSELF AND WE BROUGHT THE SHIP RIGHT ALONGSIDE. AND WE PUT TWO DIVERS IN THE WATER AND THEY SEARCHED TO TRY AND GET SOME SORT OF NAME FOR IDENTIFICATION."



    INTERVIEWER: "AND WAS IT MARKED 'PUFFIN'?".



    SEAMAN: "NO IT WASN'T".



    INTERVIEWER: "IT WASN'T".

    TWO BRITISH JOURNALISTS SET OUT ON THEIR JOURNEY IN THE PUFFIN LAST MAY. THEY WERE SIGHTED AT SEA IN AUGUST, AND THEN THE PUFFIN WAS FOUND EMPTY IN THE WAKE OF A HURRICANE LAST MONTH. THE TINY CRAFT WAS PICKED BY THE CHAUDIERE ON FRIDAY, AND IT'S BEING BROUGHT BACK TO BRITAIN. WHEN THE CHAUDIERE DOCKED IN LISBON YESTERDAY, AN INTERVIEWER ASKED ONE OF THE CREW MEMBERS...
