Background: Olympic preparations are near completion in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, where the elimination matches for the Olympic football events will be held. The largest project has been the reconstruction of the Kiev Central soccer stadium.
SYNOPSIS: The local authorities in Kiev believe that most of the tourists visiting the city for the Olympics will drive their own cars. A considerable effort has gone into upgrading the roads and pavements.
Known in the Ukraine as the "garden city" Kiev has now taken on a more commercial appearance. New hotels as well as souvenir shops are ready for business.
But Kiev's key project has been the reconstruction of their Central Football Stadium. The new seventy centimetre thick pitch has eight layers. Each layer has been le???elled with the help of laser beams.
Seventy-five metre masts with powerful flood-lights will ensure quality colour telecasts of the matches played here, in front of one hundred thousand spectators.
Located nearby is the Rus Hotel which will accommodate nine-hundred guests. It will become an Olympic village for representatives of national teams.
The hotel will also accommodate many others involved in the Games such as officials and journalists.
They'll be living in a standard of luxury which, before the Olympics, wasn't common in Soviet hotels.
The Olympic football matches begin on 20 July.
