    TWO MEN WERE KILLED WHEN FIRE GUTTED THE CANADIAN CARGO SHIP, 'WESTAR', AT SARROCH, NEAR CAGLIARI IN SARDINIA ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

    THE 'WESTAR', OF 1,924 TONS, WAS ON HER WAY FROM GREECE TO CANADA.

    THE SHIP HAD STOPPED AT SARROCH TO REFUEL. THE FIRE IS BELIEVE TO HAVE STARTED AFTER LEAKING FUEL EXPLODED IN A BOILER ROOM.

    WITHIN MINUTES THE SHIP WAS ABLAZE FROM BOW TO STERN, AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO SEA.

    THOSE KILLED WERE A CANADIAN AND A BRITISH SEAMEN.

    THREE OTHER MEN WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE 'WESTAR' CARRIED A CREW OF 23.

    YESTERDAY THE CAPTAIN AND THE FIRST AND SECOND OFFICERS OF THE 'WESTAR' WERE CHARGED IN SARDINIA WITH OBSTRUCTING A PUBLIC OFFICIAL. THE CHARGES RELATE TO AN ALLEGED INCIDENT WHEN THE THREE MEN WERE BEING TAKEN OFF THE BLAZING SHIP.
