INTRODUCTION: Stock breeders and farmers from all over Greece gathered in Athens on Monday (31 January) to protest at certain conditions in the farming industry.

SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of police stood by in case of trouble, but it was a peaceful demonstration with no incidents. After a meeting in an Athens theatre, the farmers decided to march to Parliament to present their demands. They're calling on the government for several improvements.

These include the readjustment of the prices of milk and meat, the formation of a Breeders Association and the settlement of planned loans to breeders.

The farmers are also concerned about their position if Greece joins the European Economic Community as she's expected to something this year. One of the main problems facing Greek agriculture is the fragmentation of farm holdings. There are well over one million relatively small farms in the country and the productivity is low. To keep up with EEC commitments, the government will have to increase the size of farms, and therefore the productivity. But for all the difficulties, agriculture stands to benefit more than any other sector of the economy when Greece enters the EEC.
