    Two Frenchmen alleged to have smuggled gold worth more than one million rupees (GBP55,000 sterling)into India were remanded in custody on Tuesday (18 August) in New Delhi.

    The two men, M. Cresson and M. Jallet, were questioned at the Customs House in New Delhi and face a sentence of up to six years imprisonment if convicted.

    A customs team raided the hotel room of the men on Monday morning and say they found gold weighing 125 pounds (56 kilos) in small bars inside species pockets in canvas jackets. The alleged smugglers were members of a French tourist group and the gold haul is the biggest ever made in Northern India.

    According to customs officers the man also had a quantity of undeclared foreign currency including American dollars and Swiss and French Francs.
